Did you know that the U.S. has the largest immigrant population in the world?

Approximately 1 million new immigrants arrive to the U.S. every year. This trend is also reflected in the rise of non-English languages spoken at home, with Spanish being the most prevalent.

While immigrants make up 17.4% of the U.S. labor force, only 53% are proficient in English. Notably, immigrants from Mexico, the largest immigrant group, have the lowest English proficiency at just 34% (Pew Research Center, 2023).

What this means for new hire onboarding

Given these statistics, language support is crucial for effectively onboarding new hires. Many new employees struggle to understand their benefits due to limited English proficiency, which can lead to underutilization of the benefits they are entitled to.

In fact, a 2021 study by Harvard Medical School found that Spanish speakers receive approximately one-third less care than other Americans, even with differences in baseline health and income taken into account, raising the concern that language barriers may be obstructing access to healthcare.
